Fishing Creeks

The first question is "Why fish creeks?" every one has small lakes, rivers, and large lakes near their home. If your area is like mine the small ponds are highly pressured and the only way to fish the larger lakes is to use a boat. Yes, I have a boat but not everyone does. The other problem is I may only have an hour or two to fish, is it worth it to put the boat in an out of the water I don't believe so.
The benefits I see of fishing the creeks are I can fish for as little time as 30 minutes or all day if I have the time. The deepest part of the creeks I fish is just 8 feet and if you're wading you can always walk around the deeper holes. Bank fishing is always an option especially in early spring before the weeds and brush grows too thick to get to all the good spots. When the water warms up just an old pair of gym shoes and a pair of shorts will do the job. If you wish to purchase waders I would suggest chest waders. When I use hip waders I always find areas I would like to go but the hip wader always seem to be a little to short for where I what to go.
In the little creeks by the house I have landed Large Mouth Bass, Small Mouth Bass, Rock Bass, Bluegill, Crappie, Cats, Saugeye and by accident a turtle.
Tackle is simple a medium light rod or ultra light if you prefer, a small reel I like one that will hold 80 yards of 6 lb test line. I have used 4 lb test line and had no problems landing fish but it is more likely to break if you get hung up on a rock or bush. Using 6 lb test line the hooks I use will straighten before I break the line. I have to give a plug here for Yo-Zuri hybrid fishing line because it is simply awesome.
I have found for best results which means to catch the most fish is to down size your hooks and bait. I use 16th oz jigs and 1 ? to 2 inch grubs. If you like using in line spinners use 16th oz. I take 4" twister tail worms and pinch off about an inch and use a size 1 or 2 offset worm hook. When fishing the creek I use a small waist tackle pouch with three pockets to carry all the tackle I need. My tackle is in the truck at all times incase the opportunity presents itself to fish a while.
The jigs, small spinners, small top water poppers work well in fast running water even just a couple feet deep. I have better luck in deeper water with the twister tail worms and small tubes. Small crank baits work well also if the water is clear.

Well I am back with my fourth article and it is exciting to see how many people are interested in the fun of fishing. These articles are meant for everyone. Some of the more experienced anglers probably know a lot about what I am talking about already but I think back to when I knew nothing about fishing. I wish there would have been something like that. Eventually this will be an eBook so take advantage of it while you can. I have decided to change it up a bit and submit random tips. I hope you enjoy

1. A Sure Fire Way To Find Fish

Birds are a great way to find the good fishing spots. In the winter time on the ice you will find the sea gulls and crows gathering at spots where other fishermen have left bait or some of the small fish they caught. During the summer on open water you?re going to want to watch for loons and other fish eating ducks. They are most likely diving for minnows but find the minnows and eventually the bigger fish will be there to feed.

2. Yes Fussy Crappies Can Be Caught

In the spring time you can usually find the crappies in shallow water under bushes or protected by bank cover. At this point they are preparing to spawn. At this time of the year there not too interested in feeding and especially do shy away from baits and lures. You can however coax in some of the bigger ones by presenting them bait that is as natural as possible. Cast a small minnow with no sinker. By doing this the actions of the minnow will be just natural enough to get those off season crappies biting.

3. A Worm And Bobber

When you?re using a worm below your bobber you don?t want to hook it in the head because you are going to miss your strikes. And the worst thing is those darn fish will steal your bait. You want to hook the worm twice in the middle of the body. This way the bait looks more natural and when a fish bites it is more likely to suck in the worm.

4. Walleye And Busy Lakes

So many of our lakes have become so commercialized with weekend warriors. They are populated with jet boats, jet skis, and all sorts of commotion but don?t worry the big walleye can still be caught. I would suggest getting to the lake when it?s still dark. The walleye will be hungry. You?re only going to get a few hours of frenzied fishing but it will be worth it because once the boaters get out there the walleye will make a quick dash to deeper water and their feeding will be done for the day.

5. Careful When You Are Tube Fishing

You have to always be aware of your surroundings when you fishing in a float tube. The wind can make things miserable for you. Obviously you are using your hands for fishing so your feet are going to have to do the work. I would suggest tube fishing on smaller dug outs and ponds. If it gets too windy get out because once it takes over it could be a long tiring way back for you.

Deep Sea Fishing For Tuna In Maine

Tuna fishing off the coast of Maine is immensely popular, with thousands of anglers heading out on chartered trips and privately owned boats each year in search of that once in a lifetime catch. Maine is not renowned for having a varied tuna population, with the bluefin being the only native species. However, bluefin tuna are highly sought after, particularly due to their immense size, power and swimming abilities. Once hooked, few fish will provide as big a challenge as a several hundred pound bluefin tuna.

As their name suggests, bluefin tuna have a dark blue coloring on top, graduating to silver along their sides and belly. Bluefin tuna have two dorsal fins, a single anal fin and numerous partial fins along its back and underside. Their bodies built for speed, with a streamlined shape and powerful tail. Bluefin tuna are renowned for their speed and power, giving anglers lucky enough to hook one the fight of a lifetime. In terms of size, large adult bluefin can reach lengths of up to twelve feet and tip the scales at well over one thousand pounds. More typical examples are around the eight foot mark and weigh in at nearer six hundred pounds.

Large bluefin tuna are fairly solitary fish, often traveling alone or in very small, dispersed groups. Smaller bluefin?s tend to travel in schools which may contain anywhere up to forty fish. Bluefin tuna are migratory fish, and are typically found off the coast of Maine between early summer and late fall. The best months for fishing are reputed to be between August and October.

Bluefin tuna can be caught using a variety of methods, with trolling and baitfish both widely successful. Popular baits for both techniques include squid and mackerel. Chumming with herring is also popular, particularly later in the season when attempting to land bigger fish. Given the size and power of these fish, heavy duty equipment is required to land them. Custom-built, harnessed rods coupled with 130 class reels and 200 pound test lines are not uncommon, and will suffice for the majority of bluefin present in Maine?s waters.

Catching a big bluefin tuna is largely about being in the right place at the right time. Tuna can be found at any distance from the shore, though the majority of chartered vessels travel some ten to thirty miles off the coast. Bluefin tuna can be found throughout Maine?s waters, though there are popular locations such as Jeffrey?s Ledge which are favored by many anglers.

In many parts, bluefin tuna are considered to be the ultimate game fish. Their large size coupled with the ability to swim at speeds approaching fifty miles an hour makes the bluefin tuna an exciting prospect for anglers. Add to that several-hour long fights, and you have probably the ultimate fishing challenge available in Maine.

Fly Fishing for Salmon

The world of the fly fisherman is a varied one. Salmon, trout, grayling and char inhabit the most beautiful waters of the world. Rivers and lakes that reflect forest trees, snowy topped mountains, and sometimes blue skies. The fish that live in crystal clear waters demand the very highest of angling skills. You will not hook that king of fish unless your presentation is virtually perfect. Even when not fishing, the angler can be tying flies for the next season, sitting by the winter?s fireside, lost in dreams of the next season?s catch.

Salmon ? The fish that have hunted in the sea, some for just one winter, some for as long as five years, return to the rivers where they were born. Some salmon, including the sockeye, die after spawning. These fish make their ascent to the spawning grounds once only. Others, including the Atlantic salmon, do not necessarily die at the spawning grounds but may live to migrate three or four times in their lives.

For many years mankind has marveled at how, after journeying far across the ocean, a salmon can return to the river in which it was hatched. Does this remarkable power of orientation have something to do with magnetic fields, the sense of smell, an instinct, or something else as yet a mystery?

In the Yukon River of Alaska and Canada, king salmon that were tagged and tracked travelled 3,200km (2,000 miles) in 60 days. A leap performed by Altlantic Salmon at Orrin Falls, Scotland, measured 4m (12ft).

From entering the rivers, salmon cease to feed and live on the fat built up when feasting in the ocean. Others benefit from this stored energy - bears, eagles, mink, otters, martens, wolves, and many more hunters await the salmon?s arrival with all the enthusiasm of human anglers.

One of the many wonderful things about salmon is the different number of ways in which you can catch them, despite the fact that they are supposed not to eat anything once they have left the sea!

However to many an angler there is little to beat the excitement of seeing a salmon turning in the water as it takes a fly fished in the surface layers and the quick tightening of lightweight line is an electrifying sensation.

So let us agree that salmon fishing with the fly represents the art in its purest form, even if we never lose sight of the other strategies for catching this magnificent fish.

Fly Fishing Rods


In fly fishing, just like in any form of fishing, the rod that the fisher uses is vitally important. The rods that are used are significantly different from those used in live bait fishing. Fly fishing rods are long and light and combined with heavy lines that provide the casting weight.



Fly fishing rods have quite a noticeable length, between 2m (6 feet) and 4m (14 feet). The material from which they are built varies. Years ago they were made out of a certain type of bamboo, but now they are mostly made of graphite and fiberglass, and experiments are conducted with other materials such as boron, all to create the best equipment possible.



There are a lot of factors to be taken into consideration when choosing a fly fishing rod. Saltwater rods are shorter than those used in freshwater fly fishing. The shorter length enables the fisher to combat the wind and the power of the stream more efficiently. They are also lighter, easing the load on the user. People intending to fish in saltwater should look for ring types supplied with the saltwater rod. At least one should be included with the rod.



It is necessary and must be emphasized that there is no one fly fishing rod that is better than the others. There are different circumstances in which different rods should be used. This, combined with the fisher?s own casting style and strength, creates practically endless ?preferred? rod types. Heavier rods won?t break easily but will tire the fisher faster than lighter, more fragile fly fishing rods. It all depends on the style and strength of the fisher.



It is a good idea for people to experiment with several different types of fly fishing rods to decide what fits their style and ability best. Some people may have a difficult time using the same types of rods that other fly fishers swear by.

- Bait is crucial in fishing. That's an understatement. Whether to use artificial or live bait is a question often asked. Most often, you need to use a "suck it and see" approach. The fish will often let you know what they prefer simply by how often they are biting.

- Plastic worms in a variety of colors according to many fisherman are usually a preferred option. By having a range of colors, you can mix them up and if you are getting good results with one then stick with it. Alternatively, if one color isn't working then swith to another.

- If you are using live bait then make sure the bait is kept fresh and not allowed to go off. Purchasing worms in large quantity could produce unsuitable odors so it might pay to split them up into air tight containers.

- As with most things in life, having a plan before execution gives you the best chance of success. The same applies to largemouth bass. In fact, always have a back up plan to fall back on. Look for areas where the level of noise activity is low. This is why getting to your fishing destination at "the crack of dawn" is always preferred.

- Areas where the fish can congregate such as around rocks and weed are good options. Even try around jetty structures or other areas of cover. Largemouth bass are expert at ambushing their intended prey. Remember, if you don't get results the first time, be prepared to move to a different spot. - Try and ascertain signs of life around your fishing area. Birds are a good indication of fish being present. If there is baitfish around and the birds are feeding then it's a good bet that the largemouth bass won't be far away.

- Largemouth bass are comfortable in deep or shallow water but they usually like staying out of a current flow. Your gear should include equipment for both levels of water. Always have selection of surface and deep water lures. Water currents are a factor as well. If there is a current present, then look at fishing the covered areas.

- Finally, don't become predictable. Be prepared to try different things. Move as often as you have to. If the fish aren't biting on plastic or live bait, then try a reaction lure. If you are fishing an area with murky water color try a clearer area. If you are in deep water and exhausted all bait options, then try more shallow depths.

Largemouth bass fishing can test a novice angler's ability and patience but the key is not to become stuck in a routine. If it's not working, change it.

Whenever I am not guiding or tournament fishing, I trully enjoy spending time fishing strictly for big fish. Over the years I have always been the type who would rather catch just one big fish in a fourteen hour day as opposed to twenty small fish in an hour. In my case, looking for big bass is more of a "hunting trip" rather than a day of fishing and I have learned to treat big bass as completely different critters that their younger and smaller relatives.

To me, a "big bass" starts at around seven pounds. Consistent catches of bass over seven pounds requires major changes in fishing locations, tactics and no less important, mental preparation. The hardest part of the whole process may be "psyching" yourself into the fact that during your fishing time for big fish you are going to get fewer bites and you are going to have to be much more focused. Also, you must mentally assure yourself that the reward will be worth all the effort in the end!

In the beginning itself I made it clear that it was not our purpose to make you omniscient about florida bass fishing. What we wanted was to make you aware of the fundamentals of florida bass fishing and that is what we are doing.

I like big baits for big bass. There is no question in my mind that as a bass grows so does its appetite. I have boated four pound bass with the tails of baitfish over eight inches long hanging out of their mouths and they still had the tenacity to strike the big baits that I so often throw. I love to tell the story about how when I was a younster, my brother, my cousin and I would fish for bass with live frogs on spinning rods. We used frogs so big that we could not cast them with the rod. We had to lay the rods down, flip the bail and throw the frogs by hand!

We caught some BIG bass on those live frogs but we also caught a large number of two pound fish that we figured had to defy the laws of physics by somehow getting those huge frogs into their mouths. So, I have learned that just because I choose big baits it does not mean that I will not catch some smaller fish as well!

Large topwater baits are my favorite fishing methods to use for a BIG bite. Big Spooks and buzzbaits are my favorite choices. The bigger the bait the better. In fact, I am having to make my own versions of these baits because there aren't any as big as I like them on the market! I like a buzzbait blade so big that you could get a ticket for using it in a "NO WAKE" zone.

The interesting part is that I like using these big topwater baits during hot, humid and sunny days between the hours of 8am to 2pm. I like summer days with temperatures in the upper 90s+, little or no wind, a lot of humidity and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

My favorite key areas under these conditions are shallow grass cover or steep, undercut banks with overhanging shade trees. A very slow presentation is crucial. I like the buzzbait blades to turn as slow as possible and, my fishing partners can usually eat a can of Vienna sausages before I get a big Spook back to the boat!

Slow presentations with big popping type baits along grass lines or on grass mats have also produced well for me. One thing I have recognized is that many big fish are less pressured in shallow areas during the mid-day hours and do not see many topwater baits. Most people put topwater baits away after the sun comes up.

Maine Fishing Landlocked Atlantic Salmon

Landlocked Salmon Atlantic Salmon are know only in the State of Maine. Some of the other names are Sebago Salmon or Quananiche and the scientific name is Salmo Salar. The average size is 16-18 inches and 1-2 pounds, but 3-5 pound fish are not uncommon. Adults are generally silvery wiyh a slightly forked tail and small x-shaped marking on the back and iper sides. Juvenile salmon have a dark red spot between each pair of parr marks. Mature males develop a kype or hooked jaw, during the spawning season.

Landlocked salmon are a freshwater form of the sea run Atlantic Salmon. Prior to 1868, landlocked salmon populations occurred in only four river basins in Maine, St.Croix including West Grand Lake in Washington County, the union, including Green Lake in Hancock County, the Penobscot, including Sebec Lake in Piscataquis, County, and the Presumpscot, including Sebago Lake in Cumberland County.

Today, landlocked salmon provide the primary fishery in 176 lakes comprising nearly 500,000 acres. They are present and provide incideatal fisheries in an additional 127 waters comprising about 160,000 acres. Maine supports one of the larges sport fisheries for this species in the world. Landlocked salmon also provide good fisheries in 44 rivers and streams totaling about 290 miles.

Hatchery stockings are needed to maintain fisheries in 127 lakes. These lakes do not sufficient amounts of suitable spawning and nursery areas to produce wild salmon. Without regular stockings, salmon in these lakes would disappear entirely, or their numbers would be very, very low. About 123,000 salmon were stocked annually in Maine lakes from 1996 to 2000.

Natural reproduction supports salmon fisheries in 49 lakes. These are lakes that have sufficient spawning and nursery habitat to produce enough salmon to support good fisheries. Most of these waters are located in western and northern Maine. Salmon spawn in lake outlets or inlets during the period from mid October to late November. Eggs are buried in gravel from 4-12 inches deep and remain there until hatching early the following spring.

Young salmon spend from 1 to 4 years in a stream environment prior to migrating to a lake. Recent studies in Maine show most wild salmon spend 2 years as stream dweelers. In wild salmon populations, most males spawn first at ages 3 and 4, although a few spawn at ages 1 and 2. Females usually spawn first at ages 4 and 5. Spawning runs of wild salmon may be composed of fish ranging in age from 1 to 10 but 3, 4 and 5 year old individuals make up the bulk of most runs. Landlocked salmon may be repeat spawners, but most fish observed on spawning runs are spawning for the first time. Salmon may spawn in consecutive or alternate years, some may spawn in consecutive years then skip a year, and some may skip 2 or 3 years between spawning.

Salmon populations sustained by natural reproduction often more older age fish those supported by stocking, wild salmon usually exhibit slower growth do hatchery salmon, so they reach legal size and harvested 1 or 2 years later. The oldest landlocked salmon on record in Maine was years old.

Rainbow smelts are the principal forage species for salmon in Maine lakes. Without adequate numbers of smelt, salmon growth and body conition will be poor, markedly reducing value as a sportfish. Maintain adequate numbers of smelt for forage is the most important element of salmon management in Maine. Extensive studies conducted in Maine clearly show that salmon growth rates, and consequently the size of fish available to anglers, is best in lakes with excellent water that do not have large populations of other smelt predators, particularly lake trout.

From 1996 to 2000 Maine open water anglers voluntarily released over 60% of their catch of legal salmon, ice anglers released about 25% of their legal salmon catch. Catch and release of salmon has improved fishing in many lakes, but in others it has resulted in depressed smelt populations and smaller salmon, because there are too many salmon. Maine fishery biologists have responded by reducing stocking rates by implementing fishing regulations designed to restore a reasonable balance between numbers of smelts and salmon.

Hatchery salmon generally provide fisheries for larger fish than do wild salmon because the number of smelt predators can be strictly controlled. Therefore, precise management for particular types of fisheries, such as those emphasizing trophy fish, is usually best achieved with hatchery stocks rather than wild stocks.

From 1996 to 2000, the average size of salmon harvested from all Maine lakes was 17.4 inches and 1.7 pounds, the largest since department fishery biologists began conducting scientific creel surveys in the 1950?s.

?The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.? True or False?
Answer: FALSE. I?ll explain.

If you get up tomorrow morning at sunrise and look for the sun, you?ll see it right where it always is, in the eastern sky. Then you can watch it move in an upward, westward motion. Come back this evening a little before sunset, and you can actually watch it disappear into the western horizon--- ?setting?, if you will. This is REALITY. You can see it with your own eyes. But is it the TRUTH?

No.

The truth is that the sun doesn?t rise and fall at all. But from Earth, it looks like it does because you?re standing still on a round planet that?s tilted on its axis and rotating at about 60 miles an hour. The sun is still. YOU?RE moving. And that?s the truth.

But how do you tell somebody that they don?t see what they?re looking at? They don?t feel the earth moving under their feet; gravity is holding them in place. They look up and see the large round object moving from one place to the other. For them it?s for REAL, which is where we get the word ?reality? (real-ity).

There is a saying among smart people, ?the perception IS the reality?. The rest of us respond, ?Say what? Don?t make this hard for us. Just tell us if it IS or ISN?T.?

But it?s not that simple. It?s either/or, or BOTH, depending on who you?re talking to and what you?re talking about. This is a puzzle that I try to solve in my work each day. Not in physics or in astronomy, but in MARKETING.

You see, I?m what?s called a NETWORK marketer, something that means different things to different people. Most people don?t know what it means at all. I get paid to do something that most people do for free.

If you buy something and like it, you naturally tell people. If they buy it too, you don?t make any money; you just have the satisfaction of sharing a good thing. I?m satisfied too, but I get paid for sharing. As a commission, I earn a portion of the sales made by my referrals. When somebody wants to learn how to do what I do, I can teach them. And when they make referrals that result in sales, they get paid, and I get paid some more.

HERE?S WHERE I FIGHT the truth/reality battle: some people think that what I do is bad, but it?s NOT. Like anything else, it CAN be done badly, but in and of itself, it?s good. The irony is, it pays more money than most people make who say that it?s bad! And I have more control of my time as well as my income. If it?s raining tomorrow, I don?t have to brave the elements; I can work at home and watch the rain from the window. I can run my business from anywhere in the country with a phone and an Internet connection.

I don?t have a job. I run a business of my own. The REALITY of that is scary. Reality says that 8 out of 10 businesses fail because they either don?t make enough money, or they mismanage the money they get. For me, the reality is that most network marketers fail because they either don?t make enough of those referrals, or the business that supports them goes under.

The TRUTH is that things can be done to prevent those failures. But most people who want to work for themselves won?t even try because the reality scares them so much.

?80% OF ALL BUSINESSES FAIL WITHIN 5 YEARS BECAUSE THEY EITHER RUN OUT OF MONEY, OR DON?T HAVE ENOUGH TO BEGIN WITH.?

Reality can sometimes make us irrational. But if we really want to do something, reality shouldn?t stop us. Let?s say someone likes fish and wants to go fishing. But they pick up the paper and the headline reads,

?80% OF ALL FISHERMEN DROWN EVERY 5 YEARS BECAUSE THEY EITHER DON?T KNOW HOW TO SWIM, OR DON?T HAVE A LIFE JACKET?.

If that were the reality, a lot of people would stop fishing, eating fish, or both. But that would be irrational, because fish is good. And so is fishing. The problem is in the part of the headline that reads,

??because they either don?t know how to swim, or don?t have a life jacket.?

A lot of people would say,

?I don?t like fishing.?

Why? Do you ever go?

?No. I don?t even eat fish. Fish bad. Fishermen worse.?

I resent that, because I?m a fisherman and I love fish! What do you mean?

?Well, it?s nothing against you personally, it?s just that my daddy drowned while fishing. Just like most fishermen do. You read the papers.?

Oh. I?m sorry. Did he know how to swim?

?No, he didn?t.?

Was he wearing a life jacket?

?Well, no? he didn?t even own a life jacket. Said he didn?t need it. But fishin? killed my daddy, and I?ll be damned if it?s gonna kill me too! I won?t even look at a fish!?

I?m sorry about Daddy. You must be devastated. But with all due respect, fishing didn?t kill Daddy. DROWNING DID.

You see, a lot more people could be successful in my kind of business, but they get into it without the skill and safety needed to survive. When reality screws them up, they blame the business. What?s worse, they keep other people from trying by telling them the reality.

That?s where I go to work. I tell people the TRUTH so they won?t be confused by REALITY. The truth is that I CAN HELP YOU make up to $150,000 or more, part-time over the next three years--- and give you what it takes to be safe and successful.

Reality is that you can work on jobs for 40 years and in the end have nothing but bills to show for it.

So? what?ll it be, TRUTH, or REALITY?
