Lake Ontario Salmon Fishing - Read Before You Go!

Lake Ontario salmon fishing is a huge sport in itself and big business. Reeling in these monsters is also great fun for anyone to take part in.

The Lake Ontario salmon fishing year starts out in spring and lasts into summer. Salmon are over deep water, 200' to 500', during these two seasons. Trolling 20' to 100' down is usually needed to catch these bait-fish-feeding wanderers of the deep. You'll usually want to use a down-rigger set up, but if the fish are high in the water column, a Dipsy diver will do. The locations of the fish will depend (1) where the bait fish are and (2) what the weather is like. If the sky is blue and the water is calm, expect the fish to be deep. If the weather has been particularly cool and cloudy for some time, expect the salmon to be higher in the water column. You can catch these fish on your own if you have the skills and the boat it takes. If not, there are several Lake Ontario charters who are equipped and ready for the task to get you into some exciting, rod-bending, line stripping action on the lake.

Next comes fall when these nomads of the deep come up to rivers and creeks. During this time of the year, people from all over the country come to catch these fish that are sometimes so shallow you can see their backs sticking out of the water. It is easier to catch salmon in the fall because they are usually all congregated in certain areas of creeks and rivers. This is a great time to introduce a new angler to fishing. In early fall, the salmon will be at the river mouths in the daytime and in the rivers at night, looking for a place to spawn, a mate, or food. Once the fall progresses, look for the salmon at the extreme ends of the river usually far from the lake. If there is a dam, try to get as close as possible to it. Sometimes it is elbow to elbow with anglers during this time of the year, so be sure to get to the hot spot early. If you are worried because you don't know where the certain good spots are in a particular river, there are also many fishing guides that would take you out so you don't have to constantly be looking for "the spot".

Bass Fishing Central Florida Guide & Techniques

With the following bass fishing central Florida techniques we'll unlock some of the mystery of fishing these waters.

Unless you've been to Florida and seen these grassy waters, you're in for a completely new experience.
One of my friends told me that he hated Florida bass fishing tournaments although he always seemed to do well.
The techniques I'll describe are the ones the guides use for finding and catching these monster bass.

Fishing several tournaments over the years he developed his favorite lure selection, patterns and techniques.

The primary method the guides use for catching these monsters, is fishing with Florida's Wild Golden Shiners. We'll cover other bass fishing techniques aswell but since the primary method and the best odds for boating a trophy is with shiners, we'll start there.

I once read an article about the Florida Bass fishing stocking program in Texas. A study was conducted, comparing catch rates between native Texas bass and the Florida bass introduced to Texas waters like Lake Fork.

The study showed out of 100 fish caught, 1 was a Florida bass. This told me that the Florida bass is a tougher fish to catch. Arguments can be made that these fish are not swimming in their native shallow warm Florida waters. Also the bass fishing techniques used by Texas anglers differ from what a Florida angler would use.
There are two basic techniques used by the guides:

? Drifting-This method is excellent for covering a large area. Good for finding fish as well as catching them.

Drifting is by far the best and most efficient of all the Florida bass fishing techniques used by the guides for locating and catching fish. This technique is used to cover a large area. It?s especially great for shallow lakes with a large subsurface hydrilla growth. You?ve heard the theory ?100% of the fish are located in 10% of the lake?.

This method is the fastest way to find your share of that 10%. Florida lakes, for the most part, are large shallow bodies of water often with a mean depth of 6 to 8 feet. Unlike reservoirs with old creek channels, tree stands, well defined points, current etc. for the fish to relate to, Florida bass are much harder to pattern since they can be scattered anywhere in these vast shallow lakes.
Pulling-this is simply pulling the shiner along a grass line using the trolling motor.

Pulling is free lining the shiner behind the boat with or without using a float. This bass fishing technique is deadly when pulled along a grass line like kissimmee grass. This is one of those times you must use a hook with a weed guard. DO NOT jerk when you feel the shiner starting to get wrapped around the grass. This will only result in opening the weed guard and then you are hung. Just keep steady pressure on the line until he pops free. If he continues to get hung up, check the guard, it probably came open.

Fishing For Bass In The Kootenays

Fishing for Bass in the Kootenays is a popular pastime in this tourist destination area. Warm water lakes such as Wasa Lake and Jim Smith Lake near Cranbrook and Duck Lake near Creston have been producing quality largemouth and smallmouth bass for well over 30 years. BC bass fishing has never been better.

Situated in the south-eastern part of the province the Kootenays about in wildlife and spectacular scenery. It is also a haven for those who stray the normal path of trout fishng and go for the Bronzers! There are plenty of opportunities to go fishing for smallmouth or largemouth in this world renowned wildlife area.

Wasa Lake - East Kootenays: Well known for its warm waters, the Wasa area has become a real family vacation destination. Wasa Lake is not only a good bass fishery but a good perch fishery too. With a well maintained Provincial Park and other private camping / accommodation opportunities it's a great place for the family vacation and to enjoy oppotunities like water skiing, hiking, mountain bike riding, wildlife viewing and for the adventurous - hang-gliding.
Wasa is located about 50 km (30mi) from Cranbrook on Highway 93/95 is also close to the Bavarian Town of Kimberley and Historical Fort Steele.

Fishing for Bass-Kootenays: Jim Smith Lake I think Jim Smith Lake was the first bass fishing lake that I experienced in British Columbia. I wasn't disappointed. Easily accessible from Highway 3 just east of downtown Cranbrook, Jim Smith is a residential lake area and has the good fortune of a Park to enhance your visit.

There are nice sized largemouth bass in here. There are also large rainbow trout to be had. I remember hooking into a nice 6 lb fall rainbow just before dusk after having a successful afternoon using popper lures and plastic worms to stir the souls of the largemouth bass. Check your regulations regarding the power boat restrictions on this lake.

Fishing for Bass-Kootenays: Duck Lake When it comes to numbers and size, Duck Lake is a strong contender for the title of best bass lake in BC.

I fished Duck Lake back in the late 1970's, not long after the beginning development of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. Encapsulated within a series of dykes, Duck Lake sits at the south end of Kootenay Lake and adjacent to the Kootenay River. The lake is best accessed from Hwy 3A at Sirdar or from Duck Lake Road at Wyndell. Stop by the local gas station for best access locations.

Duck Lake contains both large and smallmouth bass. The lake is quite shallow creating heavy milfoil vegetation in the lake which provides cover for the bass and the lake is quite shallow. Bass can be caught just about anywhere that the cover is available, including the middle of the lake. Surface lures or flies provide great action as well as shallow underwater techniques. The lake produces largemouth bass up to 10 lbs but the average is going to be about 2 - 3 lbs.

Duck Lake is also part of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, considered a critical international wetland and migration route. There are NO POWER BOATS allowed on the lake, including electric motors. This protects the shoreline areas where the waterfowl breed and nest.

Please fish with caution and consideration. Always check the regulations for openings, closings, limits and special restrictions

Things To Know About Fly Fishing!

Fly fishing is one of those sports where you get out what you put in.
If you put in a genuine effort you will get lots of fun and excitement from the sport.
Anyone who takes up fly fishing must have patience, be willing to practice their cast and be willing to learn about their chosen sport.

You must be willing to learn new ideas and practice them, but not keep switching from one to another. Anyone doing this will not perfect anything, always changing one idea for another and not allowing to get anything right. The ones with knowledge about their tackle, the place they are fishing at and the fish they are trying to catch will have much more success than those who just turn up not knowing anything of what they are trying to do.

There are more than 10,000 different types of flies and to find the best one for the job can be trial and error. As a rule you use bright flies on a sunny day and dark coloured flies on a cloudy or overcast day.

The green butt skunk fly is mainly black with a bright green piece of yarn, these flies are used a lot for Salmon but also used around the world with good effect.

The jock scott is one of the best flies for most seasons and waters. This delicate fishing fly can take hours to make with lots of different materials involved.

The thunder and lightening is a deep orange, gold, brown and black, perfect for cloudy or dark days and cloudy waters. This is one of the most popular fishing flies for catching salmon today. These are just a few of the most popular fishing flies used but you do not have to stick with these, if you find a fly that works for you then great.

Dry fly fishing is when you cast your fly to a predetermined spot on the water and try to get the fish to attack the fly, but also trying to strike before the fish spits the fly back out.
Wet fly fishing lets the fly sink just under the surface and pass by the fish causing the fish to strike at the fly. The most common fish to catch with a fly are salmon, trout and most fresh water fish.

Below are some of the terms associated with fly fishing which may help you understand?
Pool an area of water where it is fast flowing and entering a deeper pool of water.
It offers good prospects of a variety of fish in the area where the water flows in.

Riffle an area where the fast flowing water is broken up by some solid object in the water, the area just behind the object in the water is often good as insects will settle here and so will the fish.

Dead water is as the name implies, very still with no current and not usually a good place to fish.

Some of the other places to find fish is where there is a shady area or vegetation growing out of the water.

Brodin Ghost Gallatin

This is our new state of the art net bag. It is injection molded from pvc and is clear in color. As you can see, when the net bag is put into water, it becomes translucent and is less likely to spook fish. This net bag is proprietary to us and we have worked hard to develop one that is light in weight. You will find this net a pleasure to use on the stream. Flies, even when fished in tandem will not get stuck in the net. They will also stand out against the clear color so that you can extract them quickly and get back to fishing. We have chosen teak for the handle (there are no options) because of its relatively light weight and durability in water. Specs 24” Overall length 8” by 16.5” Opening Teak handle, four ply bow. Extra re-enforcing strip on the inside of the bow at the yoke. Rubber bags when placed in swift currents produce extra stress on a wood frame and this extra strip will ensure the integrity of the net. • Brodin products are backed by a Brodin Warranty • Free Shipping

Fishing in the Air (Joanna Cotler Books)

Early in the blue-black morning, a father and son slip out of the house with their fishing poles and a can of worms. But this is no ordinary fishing trip. With their lines and bobbers, they cast high into the air to catch the breeze, the sky, the sun, and best of all -- some wonderful memories.

In her first picture book, Sharon Creech, author of the Newbery Medal winner Walk Two Moons, teams up with Caldecott Honor artist Chris Raschka to create a beautifully lyrical and richly imagined tale about the powerful bond between a father and son.

Shimano Compre Fishing Rod - Read Before You Buy!

Shimano Compre Fishing Rod - Read Before You Buy!

The Shimano Compre fishing rod is definitely a must have and is a top class fishing rod. It has high quality components that I am going to cover. I am not going to give you bias, just my personal opinion on the Shimano Compre. It has a fair price from $89.99 - $99.99. There have been many new models inside the Compre series that were released recently.

Plus Features

You have to give Shimano a thumbs-up for the design of this rod. It definitely does have a beautiful, shiny finish to it. The new, black finish to this rod is a change from the old maroon finish and has a nice appeal to it. The new Fuji concept guides are a great addition to it to make the cast more efficient and the line stay more parallel to the rod. This rod is very sensitive, thanks to the top end IM-8 graphite construction. The spinning models have exposed blanks on the fore grip and the baitcasters have exposed blanks in front of the trigger for more sensitivity. I have been able to feel tiny minnows nip at my lures with this rod.

Here is a complete list of the features:

-IM-8 Graphite Construction (high quality, doesn't get much better)

-New Concept Fuji Hardloy guides (same here)

-Select models feature an Exposed Blank on either fore grip (spinning) or trigger (casting). (a really nice improvement!)

-Grade A cork handles

-Gudebrod thread wrapped guides for added strength

-Convenient hook keeper positioned on the side of the rod

-Lightweight cork composite butt cap (a great new feature)

-Limited Lifetime Warranty (on all Shimano rods)

Minuses

The only thing that I would like to see in this rod would be exposed blanks on the rear grips in the baitcasting line up. The price may be a little steep for angler just starting out, but for the serious anglers, this truly is a good rod and is one of my favorites.

Ice Fishing Can be a very exciting experience

One of the most popular recreational forms of fishing in Scandinavia, Russia and Germany is Ice Fishing, a sport also practiced in Canada and the United States, not only during winter, but also all year round in Alaska. However the most popular place to enjoy this activity is in the Great Lakes. Considered originally from Scandinavia, it was brought to America by Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish settlers arriving to Minnesota, a state where people from Nordic families is totally engaged in this sport. Ice fishing was exported to Canada from Minnesota and from here, it also arrived in Alaska.

Minnesotans found ice fishing an entertaining option, keeping in mind that the Great Lakes are often totally frozen, with the only exception being Lake Erie. When the bays of the Great Lakes freeze, yellow perch and northern pike are the most common catches waiting for enthusiasts of this sport. Ice fishing is practiced catching fish with lines and spears or hooks by opening a hole in the frozen lake to fish through. Depending on personal preferences, fishermen can sit in a heated cabin on the ice or on a stool placed on the open expanse of the frozen lake. Cabins are more popular indeed, because most of them have bunks and diverse amenities.

From all the forms of fishing, ice fishing is perhaps the activity requiring less effort and skill, just patience, good luck and the inner conviction of enjoy doing nothing else that sitting on ice, if not physical, at least exposed to low temperatures. For some people, this condition may appear unappealing but in the northern states, ice fishing is considered a serious entertaining activity with competitions and contests offering good prizes to people with the largest fish catches within a limited period of time.

One of the contests attracting more people every year is held at the Houghton Lake in Michigan. The "Tip-Up Town, USA", an annual festival celebrated the last 56 years ago during the second third of winter, and enhanced with other snow related activities such as strolling, snowmobiling, snow-sculpting and fireworks, in conjunction with Ice fishing.

While in the United States, Ice fishing contests have a prevalent carnival like atmosphere, full of camaraderie, in Finland, ice fishing contests have been defaced after repeated scandals involving both organizers and contestants, who have been caught cheating, making people belief this is not a sport, but just a pastime. However, in the United States there is an association supporting ice fishing activities, the American Ice Fishing Association (AIFA), which says that ice fishing contributes to managing the fish species population, and the economic growth of the community, bringing calming and relaxing effects of well being to all the participants.

Because ice fishing can be something more than a one-day experience, there are shelters conveniently located for longer fishing expeditions. Some others are mounted on-demand using simple structures, although the larger heated structures are basic for the success of fishing trips lasting several days.

Take Me Fishing, Dad

Dad get the net, I got a big one on! Those words will stick in a father and son/daughters mind for a lifetime they certainly have help shape the person who I am today. I began fishing when I was a very young child with my dad and it has become a passion and a way of life for me. It has taught me to be patient, hard working, crafty, environmentally conscience, and respectful.

Fishing has filled my mind with memories that I will cherish my whole life. I was recently fishing with my 71-year-old father and I got to admire him reeling in a 10-pound plus steelhead. Even at 71 and after a lifetime of catching fish the excitement of reeling in a large fish can turn a man into a child again. The power of fishing is captivating and the knowledge one can gain from fishing is endless.

Taking a child fishing can change a kid?s life and change a father?s life in the process. The smile I get from my son when he is reeling in a fish is awesome to say the least, but there are several ways to make sure that those fishing days are filled with fun and not frustration and boredom. Fishing can be a tough sport, but it doesn?t have to be. You don?t need to go after the biggest fish in the sea when taking a kid fishing. Kids are just as happy really in a ton of bluegills as they are reeling in a monster fish. There are several ways you can make you father son/daughter a successful fishing trip.

First, plan your trip then re-plan your trip. Make sure you have everything you need to go fishing with a kid. Remember your taking a kid fishing not you and a couple of buddy?s going for the day. You will need lunches, drinks, fishing gear, bait, and a plan B. A plan B can be as simple as an empty mason jar with a lid, fishing isn?t always fast and furious and an empty jar makes a great bug collector and will allow you to explore the outdoors with your child. Also take the opportunity when catching fish to release a fish.

A fish released is a fish to be caught another day. However kids love to keep fish and eat there catch. Don?t feel you have to release every fish, there are several fish that are great in the frying pan such as crappie, bluegill, trout, and walleye and your child will be full of excitement when he or she gets to show off there catch.

Second, you will need to know where and what to fish for. Bluegills are an excellent choice and can be found anywhere. Bluegills always relate to some sort of structure in the water whether it is weeds, wood, stumps, or docks. If you don?t have a boat a boat dock is your choice to catch bluegill, but don?t be in a hurry to jump on the dock and go fishing. Fish from the shore and cast beside the dock with a bobber/worm and put the hook down only a couple of feet. This will keep your bait in front of the fish that are directly below the dock. If you have a boat you can find panfish around weed lines, downed trees, and stump fields.

The easiest spots to find are downed trees on the shoreline, but often get fished the most. Weed beds are great attractors to panfish and also will attract larger fish in the meantime. What I have found is a great method of fishing with my child and gets a lot of smiles is having him fish for panfish around the weed line casting a bobber/worm combo and also dragging two bobbers from the back of the boat with shiners. This will allow the child non-stop action with his rod and maybe allow him to catch a much bigger fish with the shiners that are dragging behind. Also on a second note if your child is a youngster leave your fishing rod in the box. You won?t have time to fish you will be putting on bait, fixing tangles, taking fish off the hook, and laughing.

In conclusion, taking a kid fishing will definitely be a winner of an idea. You may not always catch fish, but you will have the opportunity to spend time with your child outside. And maybe will become a sport in which you and your family can spend quality time together and build a catalog of memories.
Taking your children fishing is all worth it when your kid looks at you says Dad remember when you took me fishing and?..
